America, Now an Outlier on Driving Deaths

Have recent pushes for safer cars in the auto industry led to safer roads? Yes, but America still seems to fall behind in this aspect. Driving-related fatalities in America were about 10% lower than Canada and Australia. in 1990, However, decades later in 2017, America’s vehicle-related fatality rate is about 40% higher than Canada and Australia’s.


Currently, more people in the U.S. die from car crashes than gun violence -- and the U.S. has done less than other countries to reduce these deaths. In 1996, Canada started a national campaign for safer roads, identifying major causes of crashes (e.g. speeding, lack of seatbelt use, and speeding cameras) and working to combat them. Relative to other countries, America seems to use seatbelts less, have less speeding cameras, and speed more.


However, with growing support for driverless cars, there’s hope for America’s roads being safer in the future
